Microsoft Are Stopping Support for Windows XP and Server 2003: should you care?

By now I am sure you will have had computer people telling you that Microsoft will stop supporting Windows XP and Server 2003 in April 2014 and that you need to replace any computer running either with the latest operating system.   So is this true?

How do customers know Glen is in the office?

It's a standing joke here that Glen never spends more than half a 'work' day in the office. There is always a customer that telephones with an urgent problem or one that he promised to get to sooner if there was any cancellations (his diary is normally booked weeks, sometimes months ahead).

This week we thought the impossible was going to happen and, because of two last minute cancellations and the May bank holiday, he would actually spend an unheard of three days in the office! No - there is a school in Essex with a server down that he is visiting first thing tomorrow!

We don't know how he does it. Half a day in the office and someone out there will have an urgent problem that needs sorting asap! Guaranteed.

(Shame really as there has been so much old tatt chucked out of the office because he is here - old floppy disks, zip disks, zip drives, old printer cables! Think a good chuck out is well overdue!)

A New Server and Windows 8 PCS

We recently upgraded 9 computers to Windows 8 and installed a new Microsoft 2008 server.  The customer wanted the latest computers and we were very hesitant as we have mixed views on Windows 8.  Our initial fears were confirmed when the customer phoned to say several of the computers kept hanging.  Now, however, everything seems to have settled down.  For two days they had no problems and they agreed they would telephone us if it hang again and three days have gone by since then.  So for a week everything has been stable.  We don't think this was due to any of the actions we took to resolve the problem - we think it is more likely that Microsoft issued an update that settled it all down.

The customer is very happy with the performance and speed of the computers and because we installed a Classic Start menu there have not been any comments about the new user interface.

Maybe we should not have been so hesitant?

I will let you know how this progresses.  A good Windows 8 computer is blisteringly quick, so it would be great if all our doubts and hesitations were proven unfounded.

A word of caution before you start backing up to the cloud

A business telephoned us with a hard drive failure. We asked when was your last back-up? The answer, unfortunately, was that the business backed up to the cloud, but the company only provided support by email and no replies were forthcoming. Unfortunately this is a true story, the company running the backup had ceased trading and the business lost over three months of data.

More and more everyone is being exhorted to back up to the cloud and it is increasingly being promoted that this is the only way to do it and any other way is ‘so yesterday’. Many support companies are now including this as part of their support ‘package’. Very cynically I fear that this is because there is a lot of money in moving businesses to the cloud – because of the monthly payments. Even £5 a month is great if you have 100 customers. Don’t get me wrong, I think cloud backup is fantastic but it is not a magic pill for all ills - as with everything I.T. there are pros and cons. For all but the smallest businesses we still favour local backup over cloud in the majority of cases. Let me put forward the pros and cons (the observant of you will notice that many of the advantages have flip sides and vice versa):

Windows 8 Training

We are still getting people struggling with Windows 8, so we are planning on running some courses.

  • A very ad hoc course where we will sit down with you and help you with bits you can't get to grips with.
  • A half day structured course to help new users with Windows 8
  • A one day course to help IT professionals get up to speed with Windows 8.

The aim is to help everyone to be more confident with Windows 8.
